Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree in any discipline.

This course is not open to graduates of the UNE Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning.

Advanced Standing

The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 24 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the course.

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) 1.5 year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to six years as a part-time candidate.

In exceptional circumstances and on the recommendation of the school, the period of candidature may be extended.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 72 credit points including 30 credit points at 400 level and not more than 18 credit points at 500 level.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning.

Grades of Pass

Students may be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning at the levels of Pass, Pass with Merit or Pass with Exceptional Merit. Levels are calculated on the basis of the average mark a student achieves in units completed as part of the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning. Pass corresponds to an average mark in the Pass or Credit range; Pass with Merit corresponds to an average mark in the Distinction range; and Pass with Exceptional Merit corresponds to an average mark in the High Distinction range. To qualify for the degree with these levels students must have completed the unit GEPL455.

Examination of Dissertation

For students undertaking the unit GEPL455:
(a) the dissertation will be assessed by at least two examiners;
(b) the examiners may be internal or external to The University of New England at the discretion of the course coordinator;
(c) the final level of award will be determined on the basis of marks awarded for both dissertation and course work;
(d) a dissertation will not be examined by a candidate's supervisor, but the supervisor should be consulted in the determination of the final result.

Course Aims

The Graduate Diploma of Urban and Regional Planning enables graduates to contribute towards making the world more liveable and sustainable through developing understanding and skills in all major and core areas relating to place-making and land use planning.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an advanced, systematic and coherent body of knowledge in urban and regional planning, including deep understanding of the discipline's underlying principles and concepts;
  2. demonstrate highly developed cognitive, critical and technical skills to analyse and evaluate complex land-use and built-environment problems in a range of social, economic and environmental contexts;
  3. demonstrate knowledge and skills to exercise the high level judgement and responsibility required of a highly skilled professional planner in the governance of diverse urban and regional contexts; and
  4. demonstrate initiative in planning and evaluating approaches to complex planning problems, capacity to work in leadership roles, and ability to communicate complex and theoretical information to a variety of audiences.

Communication Skills

Graduates will have skills that enable them to investigate, synthesise and communicate the ideas and information acquired from their study. These skills will include oral, graphical, online and written communication appropriate for a range of different audiences and involve a variety of media.

Global Perspectives

Graduates will be exposed to land management and planning issues in both a local and global setting. Information from diverse perspectives allows the integration of knowledge, strategies and problem solving from a variety of sources, and global perspectives will be offered in lectures, tutorials and unit material; and assessed throughout the course.

Graduates will demonstrate the ability to locate, evaluate and apply information from a variety of sources, including the researching and interpretation of primary data, in an appropriate manner, will be taught in lectures, unit materials and online activities supported by a range of learning materials, practised in interactive media (tutorials and online) and assessed in all assessment tasks throughout the course.
