Languages
UNE's language courses offer you a gateway to the diverse languages of Europe, Asia and Latin America, including Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Languages are taught by experienced staff with national and international reputations in their fields of expertise and research.
You also have the opportunity to study overseas for periods of 3-6 weeks, one trimester, or one year as part of your degree. If you decide to study overseas, you will experience another country in a way that a tourist never could, while making friends, learning about other cultures and expanding your general knowledge and language skills.
Cultural Studies
Cultural Studies includes a range of exciting units in literature and sociocultural areas of study, which can be taken as part of a language major. This is a fascinating and challenging area of study, where you will have the opportunity to explore major novels, plays and films from a range of cultures (some in translation), as well as gaining an in-depth knowledge of the societies in which the language is spoken.
You can study literature and sociocultural units in combination with a range of subjects, such as Media and Communications, English, History, Music, and Theatre and Performance.
Bachelor of Languages
This degree will help you acquire a thorough knowledge of one or more languages, and a deep understanding of its linguistics and culture. You will have the opportunity to study for a year in the country of your chosen language(s) as part of your degree.
UNE has formal study agreements with a range of overseas universities in cities including Angers and Saint-Etienne (France) and French-speaking Quebec City (Canada); Guilin and Xi'an (China); Oldenburg and Trier (Germany); Graz and Klagenfurt (Austria); Macerata (Italy); Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Nagoya, and Tokyo (Japan). These agreements allow tuition fees to be waived, and help is given with finding accommodation, including an element of pastoral care. Some financial assistance is available in connection with study at some of these universities.
Bachelor of International Studies
The Bachelor of International Studies comprises units with a global perspective from several disciplines. Topical issues include global security, earth in crisis, Islamic studies, cross-cultural communication, trade, the European Union, and Australia's relations with the US, Asia and the Pacific Islands. You can choose from two of three majors to specialise in such as Global Politics and Peace; Societies (featuring sociology, development and religion); and Languages.
Bachelor of Arts
You can major in a language as part of a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. The BA gives you the flexibility to tailor a unique degree to suit your individual interests and strengths. It provides the skills of independent thinking and cultural awareness that underline the creation of an equitable, humane and innovative society.
Bachelor of Languages and International Studies
This degree aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to function effectively both in Australia and overseas in an international business/commerce context. Students spend a year in the country of the language major with one semester of academic study at a partner university, followed by either one semester of work placement or an additional semester of academic study.
Master of Arts
You can chose majors in Chinese Studies, French Studies, Indonesian Studies and Italian Studies as part of the Master of Arts program, while Asian Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Studies in Religion are also areas of study.
Languages and Cultural Studies are also available for study as part of a Graduate Certificate in Arts.
