Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold a three or four year AQF Level 7 pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University or tertiary institution; or

(b) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree and a one or two year AQF Level 8 or 9 pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University; or

(c) hold an AQF Level 7 three year degree of a University approved by the School; or

(d) satisfy the School by means of a relevant minimum AQF Level 5 qualification* plus 5 years of relevant work experience** OR non-relevant AQF Level 5* plus 7 years of work experience**; and

(e) comply with the University's English Language Requirements for Admission Rule.

*Relevant Level 5 and above qualifications approved by the School include, but are not limited to: eLearning; Information and Communication Technologies; Programming; Vocational Education; and Web Development.

**Relevant work experience must be supported by documentary evidence and includes, but is not limited to: Adult Education; Educational Design and Development; Organisational Development; Technical Communication; Vocational Education and Training; and Workplace Training and Assessment.

Advanced Standing

At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for:

(a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University;

(b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and

(c) there shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at this University.

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) a minimum of 0.5 year as a full-time candidate;

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points from Schedule A, with not less than 18 credit points at 400-level and not more than 6 credit points at 500-level.

Award of Degree

Course Aims

This course aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills for professional educators in the area of web-based teaching and learning. It is a flexible fully online program developed to meet each individual's specific needs and circumstances.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate specialised and applied knowledge of an elearning environment;
  2. investigate, critically evaluate and apply theories of learning and teaching in an elearning environment;
  3. critically analyse learner needs and design, manage and evaluate elearning environments and demonstrate a range of strategies that use elearning tools to address specific learner needs;
  4. understand ethical, legal and social issues of elearning, and identify and apply strategies that address these issues; and
  5. interpret and apply research findings to practice.

Knowledge of a Discipline

Graduates will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the elearning environment and the related ICT tools through engagement in online learning activities. They will have expanded conceptions beyone their own sphere of experience and be able to demonstrate this through online engagements that connect with others both nationally and internationally in both formal and non-formal education settings.

Communication Skills

Graduates will be able to communicate effectively across the broad range of professional and academic skills including writing reports, posting to forums and wikis, chatting via text and participating in a virtual environment and be capable of presenting well-reasoned arguments on fundamental issues relating to elearning.

Problem Solving

Graduates will have the capability of identifying and critically analysing issues in elearning, and to think logically and creatively to develop solutions from planning through to operational practice.

Information Literacy

Graduates will be able to evaluate and appreciate the potential and limitations of a full range of sources of information and knowledge and be able to apply this across a range of online learning environments.

Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility

Graduates will be able to respond appropriately to ethical issues associated in the use of ICT in teaching. They will also understand the importance of social responsibility and demonstrate this professionally in teaching and practice by challenging the use of elearning tools in learning environments.

Lifelong Learning

Graduates will develop the intellectual curiosity to enable them to communicate, critically engage with research issues and transfer these skills into their professional and personal lives.

Independence and Collaboration

Graduates will be able to work independently, and develop creative team-based approaches to learning activities and demonstrate this by collaborating in a variety of online activities.
