Demand for agribusiness professionals continues to grow. The Bachelor of Agribusiness at UNE provides you with the business skills and knowledge that prepares you for employment in the food and agribusiness industries from the farm level through to multinational companies. You will develop a high level of problem solving and communication skills to be able to address real issues facing agriculture and business within a changing global environment - issues such as food safety and security, climate change, sustainability and increasing globalisation and integration of agricultural and food networks.

There are four approved majors within this degree, which allow you to develop further expertise:

- Finance (includes units covering financial management, markets and analysis)

- Economics (includes units covering commodity markets, policy and natural resource economics)

- Marketing and Management (includes units covering consumer behaviour, strategic marketing and marketing communications)

- Rural Science (includes units covering crop, plant and animal management, production and sustainability)

Opportunities also exist to undertake practical work experience and to participate in overseas study tours and study exchange programs that value add to the degree.

Examples include positions in small, medium and large agribusiness companies; banking, finance and insurance services sectors; business and market analysis; commodity trading; policy analysis; primary production; sales; government departments and international agencies.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) be qualified for admission (see Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Rule and Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Procedures); or

(b) hold an approved qualification from an Australian TAFE or Registered Training Organisation under the Articulation Program.

Assumed knowledge is any two units of English. For units in the economics, finance and quantitative areas, it is recommended that students have previously studied mathematics.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Students may complete work integrated learning and professional skills development (WORK300) with approved agribusiness institutions and/or an overseas study tour (OSSE300) during their degree.

Advanced Standing

Candidates are referred to the University Policy on Advanced Standing.

Candidates admitted under Rule (b) shall be granted 48 credit points of Block Advanced Standing based on their admission to candidature, according to the relevant program of study under the Articulation Program.

Honours

Students of sufficient academic merit may be permitted to proceed to a fourth year of study for an Honours degree in Agribusiness.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall:

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Candidates who have been admitted to candidature through an approved Articulation Program are referred to the Advanced Standing Policy Section (10) and General Rules Section (51) to (56) for advice on the pro-rata period of maximum candidature.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level and at least 36 to 48 credit points at 300-level or above with no more than 12 credit points at 400-level, as identified in the Program of Study for each Major or Articulation Program.

Articulation Program

Candidates who have completed the Diploma of Agriculture or a Diploma of Rural Business Management or an Advanced Diploma of Agribusiness Management offered by TAFE or a Registered Training Organisation shall be granted 48 credit points of Block Advanced Standing and are required to complete a specified program of study.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including one major shall be awarded the Bachelor of Agribusiness.

Exit Pathways

Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates who apply to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Business on completion of 48 credit points.

Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies must apply for readmission and will be subject to current course requirements of the Bachelor of Agribusiness. This may mean that they will not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course structure have changed in response to University requirements.

Course Aims

The Bachelor of Agribusiness aims to produce professional graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to participate in today's diverse and globally integrated agribusiness sectors. This degree provides students with a solid foundation in business and agricultural knowledge and qualifications that allow them to specialise in agribusiness careers or to develop careers in the general field of business.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. understand, explain and apply business and economic concepts to agricultural and agricultural related business issues;
  2. demonstrate well-developed knowledge in one of the areas of Economics, Marketing, Applied Finance or Rural Science;
  3. with initiative and judgement apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to address real issues facing agriculture and businesses within a changing international environment;
  4. be effective communicators of information, results or arguments to a range of audiences for a range of purposes and using a range of modes; and

Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline

In this course students develop knowledge of agriculture and business in a multidisciplinary approach, learning core concepts in economics, marketing, applied finance and rural science units. The use and application of economic and business skills in regional, national and international contexts is emphasised. A global perspective is important in understanding issues confronting agribusiness and associated industries in continuously changing economic, environmental, social and political environments. These concepts will be taught through lectures, tutorials, readings, online activities and practical experience. Knowledge will be assessed through a variety of assessment tasks such as assignments, examinations and report writing.

Communication Skills

Communication skills are essential in this course and students will develop both written and oral competency. These communication skills will be taught, practised and assessed in numerous activities including written assignments, oral presentations and in-class and online discussions.

Problem Solving

Students will combine discipline knowledge with information literacy skills to develop their adeptness in being able to apply problem solving skills to real issues beyond the pedagogical context. Students will be taught to identify problems and to formulate solutions.

Information Literacy

Students will use various forms of media to obtain information and data for written assignments and other assessment tasks. Students will be able to use, examine, analyse and interpret appropriate information and data in different contexts in the different discipline areas within this course.

Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility

Students are taught numerous dimensions of social responsibility in relation to agricultural and business practices. Students will be able to acknowledge and respect the viewpoints and ideas of others, behave ethically and appreciate the importance of the environment and sustainability.

Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning skills are taught and practised in assessment tasks and in the practical work experience placement undertaken by students in this degree. The discipline knowledge, information literacy and problem solving skills obtained in this course equip students with the ability to understand, interpret and critically evaluate regional, national and international issues of relevance to agriculture and business.

Independence and Collaboration

Students will have worked independently, as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary group to achieve common goals, solve problems, contribute specialist knowledge and contribute to group performance.
