Why study the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies at UNE?

This course is designed for professionals to study in depth a range of areas related to education. Participants may choose from a range of units from different areas or specialise in the areas of Gifted and Talented: Teaching for High Potential; Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL); or Careers and Transition Education.

Some units are related to the school curriculum. However, these units are not intended for the purposes of teacher preparation in any particular method.

The course articulates with the Master of Education and so provides a pathway for candidates wishing to pursue further study.

The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) has endorsed the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Careers and Transition Education) delivered by the University of New England as meeting the Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners for a period of 3 years from March 2016 to March 2019. The Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Careers Transition Education) is recognised and endorsed by the NSW Department of Education as an approved post-graduate program designed to prepare teachers for employment as a careers advisor. A limited number of scholarships are available in 2017 for current high school based career advisors and teachers wishing to improve their qualifications in this area.

Note: a Trimester 3 commencement is not available for the Careers and Transition Education specialisation. The TESOL specialisation is only available to candidates commencing in Trimester 1.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold a three-year or four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University or tertiary institution (AQF Level 7); or

(b) hold a bachelor degree and a one or two year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University (AQF Level 7); or

(c) hold a bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in Linguistics and a minimum Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TESOL specialisation only); or

(d) hold a bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in a non-relevant discipline and be able to document relevant professional experience comprising at least one year full-time (or equivalent) as a School Career Advisor or Career Development practitioner in TAFE, universities, business organisations, government agencies or private practice (Careers and Transition specialisation only); and

(e) comply with the University's English Language Requirements for Admission Rule.

The TESOL specialisation may require contact with children in an educational setting (professional experience). Students will not be permitted to attempt this unless they have first completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW). Students are referred to the Office for Professional Learning - Professional Experience Placement webpage for current information.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Across various units in this award, there are school and workplace engagement which embeds the learning in a relevant educational and professional context.

Prior to undertaking a placement students must provide evidence that they have met child protection and probity checks as required by relevant educational authorities. Further information is provided in unit material.

Advanced Standing

At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for:

(a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University;

(b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and

(c) there shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at this University.

A limited number of scholarships are available in 2017 for current high school based career advisors and teachers wishing to improve their qualifications in this area.

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) 0.5 year as a full-time candidate*;
(b) up to two years as a part-time candidate.

*Full-time candidature is only available to candidates enrolled in Schedule A.

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 400- or 500-level with not less than 18 credit points at 400-level and not more than 6 credit points at 500-level.

Award of Degree

A candidate who meets the course requirements shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies.

A candidate who meets the course requirements and satisfactorily completes the units EDUC407, EDUC496, EDUC506 and HSCS435 shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Career and Transition Education).

A candidate who meets the course requirements and satisfactorily completes 24 credit points including EDLT472, EDLT481, EDLT488 and 6 credit points from EDLT573, EDLT584 and EDLT589 shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificatae in Education Studies (Gifted and Talented: Teaching for High Potential).

A candidate who meets the course requirements and satisfactorily completes 24 credit points including EDLA487, EDLA488 and EDLA503 and 6 credit points from EDLA410 or EDLA489 shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)).

Appeals

Course Aims

This course aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills for professional educators. It is a flexible distance education program that provides a pathway for further learning.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  2. communicate a well-developed personal theory of education as it relates to their field of study;
