Why study the Bachelor of Theatre and Performance at UNE?

This degree offers an experience of theatre from a range of different points of view - the actor, the director, the playwright, the critic and the audience member. It begins with introductions to the roles of the actor and the writer as creators of theatre events, and then allows students to focus on playwriting, performing, and the informed study of theatre within society, both now and throughout Western history. There is a special focus on Australian theatre. At the end of their studies, students have the opportunity to focus on directing for the theatre. Both on-campus and distance-education students complete a major in Theatre and Performance, and are encouraged to extend their studies in a wide range of other possible disciplines in the arts and humanities fields.

Career Opportunities

Opportunities in acting and performing, directing and further studies in the arts and humanities fields. Theatre and Performance provides the fundamental training for those wanting to enter the theatre profession, but it also gives valuable experience in a wide range of career skills, including oral communication, public presentation, teamwork, creative thinking (a quality which is in great demand among employers) and problem solving. Many graduates in theatre and performance find work as teachers of Drama in the secondary school system, but they can be found in a wide variety of other careers: it is useful preparation for any career in the public gaze, including journalism, teaching, law, and business.

Period of Candidature

For candidates admitted under Rule (a) the period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;

Cadidates who have been admitted to candidature through an approved Articulation Program are referred to Clause 2.17 of the University Policy on Advanced Standing for advice on the pro-rata period of maximum candidature.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate admitted under Rule (a) must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level and at least 36 credit points at 300-level and not more than 12 credit points at 400-level.

Articulation Program

This program is articulated with the two-year Diploma of Performance Practice of the Actors College of Theatre and Television. Candidates must pass units to the value of 96 credit points with not more than 12 credit points at 100-level, at least 36 credit points at 300-level, and not more than 12 credit points at 400-level.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Theatre and Performance.

Course Aims	This course aims to provide students with high-level academic, theoretical and practical skills, as well as learning opportunities, in theatre and performance.
Learning Outcomes	Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: critically analyse and synthesise theatre and performance methodologies and theories in historical and socio-cultural contexts, in practice and scholarship; critically evaluate the contribution of theatre makers and audiences to the theatrical and cultural event; demonstrate cognitive, technical and creative performance skills and exercise critical thinking and judgement in performance; communicate ideas effectively in written, oral and performance forms; and exercise initiative and judgement in planning, problem-solving and decision-making and work effectively in collaboration and independently.
Graduate Attributes	Knowledge of a Discipline Graduates will be able to demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of Australian and global theatre history, theory and practice. Graduates will be able to apply cognitive, technical and creative theatre skills with initiative and judgement in planning, problem-solving and decision-making in professional practice and/or scholarship. Communication Skills Graduates will be able to demonstrate and apply written, oral and performative communication skills to interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Problem Solving Graduates will be able to exercise broad knowledge, creative judgement and critical thinking in identifying and solving problems in theatre practice and/or scholarship with intellectual independence. Information Literacy Graduates will be able to apply a range of research methods and technologies to generate and transmit solutions to sometimes complex problems in theatre practice and/or scholarship. Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility Graduates will be able to demonstrate professional and ethical conduct in their theatre practice and/or scholarship. Lifelong Learning Graduates will be able to demonstrate autonomy, well-developed creative judgement and responsibility for their own continued learning and skills development in theatre practice and/or scholarship. Independence and Collaboration Graduates will be able to demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills with responsibility and accountability both independently and in collaboration with others. Theatre practice is always a collaborative exercise involving theatre makers and audiences; it thus demands and rewards high levels of skill in the area of teamwork.
