Why study the Master of Applied Theatre Studies at UNE?

This course has closed for admission T1 2018

The Master of Applied Theatre Studies provides students with a unique opportunity to study applied theatre and performance at a postgraduate level entirely via distance education. This is currently the only course of its nature in Australia.

Students will be able to extend their knowledge and skills in the areas of theatre production, dramaturgical research, and academic writing. The course is aimed at students who have prior experience of theatre practice as a performer, director, designer, playwright or teacher. This is a creative practice as research course integrating theoretical and practical study. Students take part in a performance or other theatre event as playwright, director, actor or designer, and produce a short dissertation which builds on the knowledge and understanding gained during the practical work on the production. There is room within the course of study for listed units which will allow students to further develop their academic skills in writing, contemporary theoretical approaches, research methodology and/or the study of theatre history.

Candidates enrolling in the course are required to arrange to participate creatively in a practical theatre project with an appropriate organisation, such as a professional, amateur or community theatre company, or a school or university. It is the responsibility of the candidate to arrange facilities and resources for the practical component of the course as the University of New England cannot provide these online.

Examples of careers that can be assisted through a Master of Applied Theatre Studies include professional theatre direction and production, arts management, the teaching of theatre and performance and entrepreneurial theatre making. A Master of Applied Theatre Studies is also a pathway into further postgraduate study.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

1. (a) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification with a major or equivalent in Theatre Studies and have 2 years' experience as a performer or director or designer or playwright or teacher; or

(b) hold an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Bachelor with Honours or AQF Level 9 Masters qualification in a relevant discipline*; and

2. All applicants must submit a preliminary research proposal (approximately 500-800 words) which should:

(i) describe their proposed creative project for the Master of Applied Theatre Studies;

(ii) include a rationale for the choice of creative work in the context of the overall research project and explain why this is significant; and

(iii) include a short reference list.

Applicants are advised to discuss this proposal with the course coordinator before submission.

Relevant Disciplines include, but are not limited to:

English; Media and Communications; Performance; Theatre Studies; Writing.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Candidates are required to take a creative role in a practical theatre project as part of their studies. In the case of school teachers this could involve working with pupils in a school production (of an appropriate scale); for theatre practitioners it could involve taking part in a production with an established theatre company. The University of New England cannot provide facilities or resources online for the practical component of the course - it is the responsibility of the candidate to arrange this.

Advanced Standing

The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 24 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the course. This may include 6 credit points on the basis of considerable professional experience.

Advanced standing shall not be awarded for ARTS502.

Advanced Standing

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to four years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 48 credit points with at least 36 credit points at 500-level.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Master of Applied Theatre Studies.

Course Aims	This Masters Degree (Coursework) provides extended learning opportunities in applied theatre and performance studies by distance education. It offers those people who have already completed an undergraduate degree the opportunity to continue university study, either to further career or professional aspirations. Specifically targeted at teachers and practitioners of theatre both in Australia and internationally, combining theory and practice, research and application.
Learning Outcomes	Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of theatre theory and production; research and apply established theories to a body of knowledge or practice; demonstrate expert cognitive, technical and creative skills in theatre and performance to interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences; research, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice; plan and execute a substantial research based performance project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship; apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement, adaptability and ethical conduct as a practitioner and learner; and show initiative in exploring career and further learning pathways and opportunities with a high level of personal autonomy and accountability; consistently take responsibility for seeking improved learning and maintaining accurate evidence of learning achievements from within formal course experiences; and demonstrate the ability to plan a course of action for further learning and continuing professional practice.
