There are now many ‘johnny-come-lately’ universities in online education. UNE has been delivering distance education since 1955 – that’s longer than any other Australian university. Perhaps that’s why our students continue to rate us so highly for student satisfaction and teaching quality.
Study across three study periods with 24/7 online tutor support. If you don’t have entry qualifications, our free Pathways Enabling Course gives you entry and credit to most of UNE’s undergraduate degrees.
If you prefer to study on-campus, UNE has a campus in Armidale.

The world runs on technology, and computing now underpins everything from agriculture to zoology. The computing, IT and data science degrees at UNE provide you with the skills you need to become one of the technology creators - to design, create, deploy, improve, adapt, and apply technology to solve problems for people and society. They provide a solid foundation in programming, software design, operating systems and computer algorithms, as well as providing technological skills that are in high demand throughout the IT industry, including data science, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, mobile application design, and web and network technologies.
Our computing, IT and data sceience courses are taught by dedicated and highly qualified professionals who are active computer science researchers. Areas of research include data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer vision, distributed systems, human-computer interaction, and software engineering.
The Bachelor of Computer Science will teach you strong programming, technical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. The course is particularly designed with software development and computational science roles in mind, but as computing has become so important to so many different fields, it allows the flexibility to take a number of units from other disciplines as required.
The course includes core units that gives you a solid programming, mathematical, and software engineering background. From the core units, you will learn multiple programming languages as well as the modern collaborative tools and practices that software teams use to design, develop and deliver software that solves problems for their users. You will also take a team capstone project, in which you must develop solutions to real world computing problems drawn from community organisations and industry. The degree has two majors:
The Bachelor of Computer Science has been granted Professional Level accreditation by the Australian Computer Society.
This course provides a comprehensive, modern postgraduate education in the principles and practice of ICT together with the opportunity gain enhanced knowledge and skills in research.
Emphasis is placed on the structured design of algorithms for computer-based implementations of real-life tasks. The interactive execution, analysis and use of programs are discussed together with advanced algorithmic designs and programming techniques; informal notions of program specification and verification; a high-level description of the abstract architecture of the von Neumann machine; numerical and non-numerical applications; and social issues.
This degree is designed for students who do not have a computing background and who are seeking to achieve qualifications in information technology. Study is available in areas such as internet publishing, operating systems, software engineering, GUI programming and interaction design, internet security, data mining, wireless networks, and game programming.
The Master of Information Technology has been granted Professional Level accreditation by the Australian Computer Society.
This degree is designed for students who do not have a computing or IT background and who are seeking to achieve qualifications in information technology. The course offers considerable depth and flexibility with study available in topics such as computer networks and security, artificial intelligence, management information systems and user experience design and web programming. The course also allows students to complete an information and communications project relating to a real-life case.
The Master of Information Technology (Business) has been granted Professional Level accreditation by the Australian Computer Society
Data is a vital asset valued by virtually every organisation in the world. It provides the basis for sensible, evidence-based decision making, and the ability to manage and make sense of data is a key skill in the modern workplace. Our Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Data Science will provide students with the required knowledge and practical skills to analyse and manage data, and solve complex and challenging problems.

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.
We have three teaching periods (trimesters), commencing in February/March, July and November: giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.
Online study can also be referred to as 'distance education' (sometimes also off-campus education, or external study) and provides an opportunity for you to study without having to physically attend a campus.
To make sure your learning can take place when it suits you, UNE provides online facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, order library books, check your results and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
As a UNE student, you will have access to our professional support services including:
We believe that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community.
Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter.
UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receive five stars from students for teaching quality.
Connect to online support at any time. If you are working on an assignment, you can upload a draft 24/7 and get detailed feedback in less than 24 hours.
Online after hours support (3 pm – 12 am) is available for foundation skills in maths, science, business studies, accounting, economics and statistics.
Academic literacy and assignment support is available for writing, assignments, research, referencing, and study skills.
Some online units have intensive schools (sometimes known as residential schools). They enable you to engage in practical exercises and classes that are designed to achieve specific learning outcomes. Intensive schools are a valuable and enjoyable experience that enrich the learning process and help build your networks.
