Bachelor of Nursing

Why study the Bachelor of Nursing at UNE?

Nursing plays a key role in health services across the world, and professional nurses work in a wide variety of settings. The Bachelor of Nursing equips graduates with the key knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of nursing. Students who successfully complete 6 trimesters of full-time study (or part time equivalent) exit with a Bachelor of Nursing and are eligible to seek Registered Nurse status with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA) as a professional nurse in Australia and by mutual recognition in New Zealand. The course aims to give graduates an appreciation of the value of life-long learning and a firm foundation for further study at a postgraduate level.

Units are offered in all three trimesters allowing students to complete the course in two calendar years if they wish.

In addition, students who hold an un-restricted Enrolled Nurse qualification registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA) who enter in the second year of the course and successfully complete two years (four trimesters) of full time study may receive a Bachelor of Nursing and eligibility for Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA).

Beginning students may commence study in Trimester 1 of the first year of the course. During the first two trimesters they will undertake Science for Nursing and Foundations of Nursing units, which will be offered via blended learning in the on-campus mode only. This study mode consists of fully on-campus face-to-face teaching of all theory and clinical skills and off-campus clinical placements of between 80 and 160 hours across the various trimesters of study. The second and third years of the course will be offered both on campus and online via the Blended Learning mode*.

Enrolled Nurses may enter at Trimester 1 and may study either on campus or online.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing degree with a grade point average 5.5 or better overall in the final two years, and who are practising Registered Nurses may apply for the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours.

* Blended learning refers to a combination of mandatory on-campus intensive schools, structured online learning and clinical practice blocks.

Alternative Pathway

Students may seek to enter via an alternative pathway. This pathway provides opportunity for those who may not meet other entry requirements to commence an undergraduate nursing course if they are deemed suitable.

All applicants (including UAC/QTAC applicants) who choose to apply via this pathway must complete a special written application form as part of the application process.

The special written application pathway will only allow for entry at the beginning of Year 1.

UNE has been at the forefront of nurse education longer than any other university in Australia. UNE was the first tertiary education provider in Australia to offer distance education for nurses. UNE nurse graduates are well respected within the profession, they are critical thinkers and well prepared educationally for the professional challenges they will face. The 880 hours of supervised clinical practice over six trimesters ensures that students are well prepared for their roles as professional nurses when they complete their course.

This course is offered On campus Full-time or Part-time in year 1, then On campus or Online, Full-time or Part-time in years 2 and 3.

Trimester 3 entry is available for: On campus Full-time international pathway students admitted under Rule (c) only.
