A candidate shall:

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be up to two years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points including at least 18 credit points at 400- or 500-level, and not more than 6 credit points at 300-level.

Course Aims

The Graduate Certificate in NDIS Business Development aims to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to effectively identify, analyse and resolve management issues through a program of study to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the issues affecting the disability sector. As such it offers study of both legal and business frameworks that might impact upon organisational operations that may affect the optimum delivery of client focussed services. At the end of the program of study students will have a sound grasp of the legislative frameworks underpinning the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate specialist knowledge in relation to historical underpinnings and current application of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Graduates will develop professional skills in interpreting the relevant legislation and understanding its application to impact on disability law;
  2. demonstrate ethical action and social responsibility with particular recognition and understanding of the social impacts that the National Disability Insurance Scheme legislation will have on sector organisations at a national level;
  3. demonstrate sophisticated skills in business development in organisations within the disability sector;
  4. demonstrate awareness and applied knowledge needed for the effective governance of organisations within the disability sector including the ability to manage an organisation that provides disability services;
  5. demonstrate knowledge of Australian business structures with the ability to identify and discuss the legal issues that may arise in the running of a business model and recognise dissimilar viewpoints and combine ideas to support a business case; and
  6. produce clear and coherent written communications that are based upon analysis, synthesis, and the application of professional judgement, as well as reflection and evaluation of the relevant law, to competently and confidently apply the skills of legal reasoning and analysis to factual problems.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline

Knowledge of a discipline is taught, practised and assessed in all units. Students will gain an understanding of effective legal prosecution. Students will be encouraged to consider Criminal law and prosecution through Indigenous, theoretical, social and political perspectives. Legal resources may include international law, comparative material such as case-law and legislation from other jurisdictions and also social, political and economic perspectives.

Communication Skills

Communication skills are taught, practised and assessed throughout this course. Students will develop oral advocacy and presentation skills relevant to legal contexts through assessments such as essays and oral presentations. These skills will benefit students as they will have well-developed communication skills which are essential to collaborate and liaise effectively with clients and colleagues in legal and non-legal contexts.

Problem Solving

This graduate attribute is taught, practised and assessed throughout the course using scenarios requiring students to use cognitive and critical thinking skills to identify legal issues, analyse and evaluate the relevant legislation and cases to construct relevant solutions and ethical legal arguments.

Information Literacy

Information literacy is taught, practised and assessed throughout the course as students need to identify, access, and navigate complex databases to retrieve primary and secondary material. Students need to critically evaluate this information to complete assessment tasks.

Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility

Throughout the course, ethical conduct and social responsibility is taught, practiced and assessed. Students need to reflect on the principles of professional and social responsibility and apply these to a range of ethical issues and scenarios. This is assessed through evaluation and analysis of reflective based and scenario based assessment tasks.

Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning is taught and assessed in this course through reflective tasks that encourage critical analysis on professional experience, and appreciation of the law and business as a dynamic discipline.

This graduate attribute is taught, practised and assessed in this course. Students are required to work independently and complete learning and assessment that requires self-directed learning and initiative. Students must also collaborate together in a variety of learning and assessment tasks over the course.
