Why study the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours at UNE?

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours will develop a strong foundation in basic and pharmaceutical sciences core skills which will be integrated with contemporary knowledge and application of pharmaceutics and pharmacy practice. Prior to the commencement of the third year, students are required to complete 100 hours of practical experience work in a pharmacy which will be integrated into their course work. In the fourth or final year of the degree students will be required to undertake approximately 200 hours of clinical placements in community and hospital pharmacies of which some placements will be outside normal university trimester times. Students will be encouraged to take these placements in rural and regional areas.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours is offered as a 4-year full time undergraduate course and is also available by distance education. The University of New England is the first university in Australia to offer a Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours by distance education delivery. The degree must be completed within ten years from the date of commencement.

This program has been granted accreditation by the Australian Pharmacy Council and is approved by the Pharmacy Board of Australia as a qualification leading to registration as a pharmacist in Australia.

For students commencing in Trimester 2 this course is offered only online in a part-time mode.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours requires a high level of English language proficiency. All applicants are referred to the English Language Requirements for Courses in Pharmacy. TOEFL test results are not accepted.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

In the first and second years of the degree, students will be required to undertake 100 hours of practical work experience in pharmacies.

Scholarships

Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme

The Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme provides financial support to encourage and enable students from rural and remote communities to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at university. At least 30 scholarships are offered annually, with a value of $10,000 per annum per student. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to seek employment in rural and remote areas following graduation.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours.

Classes of Honours

(a) There shall be two classes of honours, namely First Class Honours (H1) and Second Class Honours, Division 1 (H2A), Second Class Honours, Division 2 (H2B) and Pass.
(b) Candidates who achieve First or Second Class Honours will have the Honours level recorded on their testamur and transcript of academic record.
(c) Candidates who do not achieve First or Second Class Honours will be awarded the degree at the level of Pass.
(d) An exceptionally distinguished candidate who has been awarded First Class Honours may be awarded a University Medal.

Appointment of Supervisor

Students are appointed a research supervisor (principal supervisor); a co-supervisor may be appointed. Normally, students meet with their supervisor fortnightly at the start of their program. Meetings with their supervisor will become less frequent as the program progresses. Meetings may be in person, online, videoconference or telephone conference. From time to time students may be requested to attend supervision meetings in person.

Thesis

(a) In order to complete PHAR495, the student shall submit a thesis, embodying an independent investigation on a topic approved by the course coordinator, in a form approved by the course coordinator. The results of the student's work shall make a sound contribution to the discipline of Pharmacy.
(b) Depending on the topic under investigation, the approval of the relevant Ethics Committee must be sought if required.
(c) Except with the permission of the course coordinator, on the recommendation of the supervisor, the dissertation shall not exceed 6,000 words of text, excluding appendices.
(d) Students will be required to enrol in and complete the thesis (PHAR495) in the relevant teaching period of Year Long 1, Year Long 2 or Year Long 3.

Submission of Thesis

(a) Students must submit an electronic copy of the thesis for examination to the course coordinator. The presentation of the thesis must follow the guidelines provided.

(b) The student shall, upon submission of the thesis, following protocols approved by the course coordinator, make arrangements for all original data to be retained in an area of safe storage for a period of not less than five years from the date of submission. The data stored must be in a form that would, at a minimum, permit replication of all analyses reported in the thesis.

Examination of Thesis

(a) The thesis will be examined by two examiners.

(b) A thesis will not be examined by a student's supervisor.

(c) The examiners shall decide whether to recommend that the thesis (PHAR495):
(i) be given a grade of Fail, Pass, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction; or
(ii) be amended according to the examiners' reports and to the satisfaction of the supervisor(s); or
(iii) be revised and re-submitted for further examination.

(d) The course coordinator will advise the supervisor(s) of the outcome of the examination, along with a copy of the examiners' reports as appropriate, indicating any amendments to be considered. Students need to consult with the principal supervisor and undertake any minor amendments to the satisfaction of the principal supervisor. The principal supervisor shall advise the course coordinator that amendments recommended by the examiners have been addressed to his or her satisfaction and that the grade for PHAR495 may be finalised. The course coordinator will finalise the result and make a summary recommendation to the Pharmacy Examiners Board regarding the final grade and percentage mark to be awarded.

(e) Where the student has been permitted to revise and resubmit the thesis for re-examination, a maximum grade of Pass and scorre of 50% shall be given for any resubmitted thesis.

(f) If the examiners are unable to reach an agreement, the course coordinator shall refer their reports to the Pharmacy Examiners Board for a recommendation. After considering the examiners' recommendation(s) and reports, any comments from the supervisor and any recommendations from the Pharmacy Examiners Board, the course coordinator may:
(i) recommend that the thesis (PHAR495) be awarded the grade of Fail, Pass, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction; or
(ii) allow the student to revise the thesis for re-examination and appoint an additional examiner or examiners.

(g) The Pharmacy Examiners Board shall make the final determination as to the outcome of the examination of the thesis, based on the recommendation of the course coordinator.

Exit Pathways

Subject to satisfying the Advanced Standing rule, candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Science after completion of 48 credit points or with the Advanced Diploma in Science after completion of 72 credit points.
Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies must apply for readmission and will be subject to current course requirements of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours. This may mean that they will not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course review structure have changed in response to University or external accreditation body requirements.

Course Aims	The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours aims to produce graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to commence supervised practice in a preregistration training program and to achieve the recognised competency standards for practice of pharmacy in Australia and New Zealand. Graduates will also have an understanding of the place of research in furthering the theory and practice of pharmacy.
Learning Outcomes	Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: demonstrate commitment to professional behaviour and accountability in the commitment to care for and about people; retrieve, critically evaluate and apply evidence in professional practice; demonstrate team and leadership skills to deliver safe and effective practice; demonstrate an ability to take account of the patient perspective, to make, act on and take social responsibility for clinically, ethically and scientifically sound decisions; demonstrate communication skills in lay and professional language, choosing strategies appropriate for the context and diverse audiences; reflect on current skills, knowledge, attitudes and practice; planning and implementing for ongoing personal and professional development; apply pharmaceutical, medication and health knowledge and skills; (i) within their scope of practice, in the assessment of individual health status and medication needs, and where necessary, develop, implement and monitor management plans in consultation with patients/clients and other health professionals to improve patient outcomes; and (ii) promote and optimise the health and welfare of communities and/or populations; demonstrate the ability to formulate, prepare and also supply medications and therapeutic products; and articulate an understanding of the place of research in furthering the theory and practice of pharmacy.
Graduate Attributes	Knowledge of a Discipline Students will develop an understanding across a number of areas which underpin therapeutics. This will be taught in lectures, tutorials and workshops and will be assessed in examinations, tests and assignments and a thesis. Communication Skills Students will build communication skills verbally and in a written format and be assessed on these skills. Problem Solving Students will have problem solving approaches demonstrated in learning materials and will develop capacity for problem solving during tutorials and assignments. Problem solving will be assessed in assignments, examinations, planning and conducting a research project and a thesis. Information Literacy Students will be required to demonstrate skills in retrieval and appraisal of information. This will be assessed in assignments and the thesis. Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility Students will develop an understanding of social determinants of health; they will develop skills around inter-professional practice and health promotion. This understanding and these skills will be assessed in tests, assignments and the thesis. Lifelong Learning Students will develop skills of reflective practice and will be able to seek and synthesise information. This will be assessed in individual and team assignments. Independence and Collaboration Elements of each unit in the program of study require students to work independently. The units in this program, with a practical component, require collaboration as students work in teams.
