5 stars overall experience good universities guide seal

UNE has been helping busy adults study from home longer than any other Australian university. With more than 60 years of experience it’s no wonder UNE has an unbroken record of maximum 5 star ratings, awarded by our students, for teaching quality, student support and overall experience in the Good Universities Guide 2007-2019.

Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of our mental states and behaviour - how our experiences and biology interact to produce our thoughts and actions. Specific areas of study examine a range of psychological phenomena including learning, emotion, perception, memory, language, consciousness, and brain function. We also cover applied topics such as sustainability psychology, sports psychology, and the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

Throughout all our programs we emphasise the importance of research skills, data analysis, and the writing of scientific reports. Psychology at UNE has a long and distinguished history. We offer courses that are recognised and respected by professional bodies, registration agencies and other universities throughout Australia and the world. All staff are highly qualified, conducting research and teaching in a diverse range of psychology topic areas.

Sociology

Sociology is the study of society, with social relations between individuals and groups at its focus. Sociology can help us better understand who we are, what we do, and why we do it. In this way it can increase our self-knowledge and cultural awareness.

Sociologists study social life in all its forms, from everyday practices like shopping, to social institutions such as the family, health and medicine, death, beauty and fashion, gender and sexuality, the media, crime, globalisation, social and economic development and culture. Sociology can be studied at an undergraduate level as part of a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Social Science or Bachelor of Criminology, and within a Graduate Certificate in Arts or Master of Arts at postgraduate level.

Bachelor of Social Science

You'll analyse contemporary social issues and challenges, and develop the skills, knowledge and capacity to make a real difference in the world with a Bachelor of Social Science from UNE. With a focus on social justice and human rights, social change, gender equality, community welfare, sustainability and cultural diversity, choose from 11 social science majors in a flexible course structure, including opportunities for on-the-job training. You'll develop vocational and scholarly skills, and learn how to conduct social research using a range of methods, techniques and technologies from world class social researchers.

Majors available in the Bachelor of Social Science are Aboriginal Perspectives, Criminology, Health Management, Linguistics, Organisational Management, Peace & Development Studies, Political & International Studies, Psychology, Social Philosophy, Sociology, and Urban & Regional Planning.

A History of 5 Star Online study

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), commencing in February/March, July and November: giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

How does online study work?

Online study can also be referred to as 'distance education' (sometimes also off-campus education, or external study) and provides an opportunity for you to study without having to physically attend a campus.

To make sure your learning can take place when it suits you, UNE provides online facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, order library books, check your results and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Student Support Team

As a UNE student, you will have access to our professional support services including:

  • Career development
  • Individual counselling — for personal and academic issues
  • Special needs — if you need adjustments to how you study because of temporary or permanent disability or you need diversity and equity advice.

Online Community

We believe that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community.

Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter.

UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.

24/7 Online Tutor Support

Connect to online support at any time. If you are working on an assignment, you can upload a draft 24/7 and get detailed feedback in less than 24 hours.

Online after hours support (3 pm – 12 am) is available for foundation skills in maths, science, business studies, accounting, economics and statistics.

Academic literacy and assignment support is available for writing, assignments, research, referencing, and study skills.

Intensive Schools

Some online units have intensive schools (sometimes known as residential schools). They enable you to engage in practical exercises and classes that are designed to achieve specific learning outcomes. Intensive schools are a valuable and enjoyable experience that enrich the learning process and help build your networks.
