Criminology and Forensic Science are exciting areas of study that have developed rapidly in recent years. While they are closely related, each role is quite different. A forensic scientist examines a crime scene in a bid to gain evidence that can be used in a court of law to help solve a crime. A criminologist looks at the reasons for crime and why it is committed, and what effect crime has, both on individuals and society as a whole.
Criminology is the study of crime, violence, crime control, crime policy and prevention. Criminology questions the way crimes are presented in the media and political speech. As a student of Criminology, you will study:
You will also undertake training in research methods, crime prevention and social policy analysis, which will equip you with the necessary skills for employment in the criminal justice sector. The degree is taught by award winning academics, widely recognised for their excellence in teaching and research.
A double degree in Criminology and Law provides you with the flexibility to either pursue a purely legal career as a practitioner or to build a successful career in criminology, drawing on legal skills and knowledge.
Forensic science, in its broadest definition, is used to support the criminal justice system. In practice, forensic science involves the application of scientific techniques to the investigation of crime. Forensic science is a major offered within the Bachelor of Science through which you will gain an understanding of a broad range of scientific principles that form the basis of techniques used in forensic analysis, and acquire the laboratory skills needed to conduct these analyses. Students are introduced to a number of practices associated with forensic science, such as the presentation of scientific evidence in court, the importance of record keeping and chain of custody. You will study a diverse range of units, including:
Please see course details for individual course rules and admissions criteria. Note some degrees have mandatory intensive schools which require attendance on campus.
We have three teaching periods (trimesters), commencing in February/March, July and November, giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.
