Economics and Agribusiness

The world's economies, living standards, commercial and political systems are all at the heart of economics. Through the study of economics, you will gain insights into the issues that are important for understanding the way the economic systems work, as well as for careers in business and government.

Our programs provide training in analytical, business and management skills for the broad area of economics as well as the natural resource and rural sectors.

Issues of social responsibility, ethical decision making, and environmental and business sustainability are incorporated throughout our economics programs, and you will develop skills to use, critically analyse, interpret, construct and communicate economic and social data with an emphasis on economic decision making.

UNE economics graduates occupy numerous top jobs in Australia and internationally, and a UNE economics degree is well-regarded in the public and private secotor, both nationally and internationally.

Economics and Agribusiness Degrees

The Bachelor of Agribusiness provides you with the business skills and knowledge that prepares you for employment in the food and agribusiness industries from the farm level through to multinational companies. You will develop a high level of problem solving and communication skills to be able to address real issues facing agriculture and business within a changing global environment - issues such as food safety and security, climate change, sustainability and increasing globalisation and integration of agricultural and food networks.

The Bachelor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at UNE is the longest running agricultural and resource economics degree in Australia. Through the study of agricultural and resource economics you will gain an understanding of the key challenges and trade-offs confronting business, government and the community at large. Core units include microeconomics and macroeconomics, farm and resource management, rural finance and risk management, environmental and natural resource economics, international trade and business, and economic analysis of chains and networks.

The Bachelor of Economics looks at how modern economies operate - how they trade and grow, the role of prices, supply and demand, and how business and government both affect and are affected by the economy. You will develop analytical skills of both quantitative and policy-based economic issues - practical skills and knowledge that can be then adapted to a range of careers. You will graduate with the knowledge, skills and attributes required for problem solving and economic decision making across a diverse range of economic issues. This degree will give you a strong economic and quantitative background that allows you to explore a variety of professional career options. The majors available in the Bachelor of Economics are Applied Econometrics, Economics, Economic Development, and Environmental Analysis and Policy.

The Master of Economics is an excellent means of obtaining advanced-level qualifications in the disciplines of Economics, Agricultural and Resource Economics and Econometrics which are all areas of research and teaching strength at UNE. Graduates of the Master of Economics will have skills that will provide career opportunities and advancements in government and non-government organisations that are involved in economic analysis, economic and social policy development, project management and policy evaluation.

Graduates of the Master of Economic and Regional Development will have holistic skills that will provide career opportunities and advancements in non-government and government organisations that are involved in community and regional development projects, including international organisations and aid agencies involved in project planning, management, impact and policy evaluation. Majors available in this degree include Asian Studies, Humanities and Community Development, Rural Development, Urban and Regional Development, and a General Program in which you can design a study program to suit your needs.

Studying Online

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.
