Education and Teaching

UNE provides a range of quality programs in Early Childhood, Primary Teaching, Secondary Teaching, and Special and Inclusive Education.

Need help finding the right Teaching degree for you?

We've built an online tool to help navigate the changes to entry requirements for Teacher Education degrees (i.e. '3 Band 5's including one in English) - our Teaching Solution Finder. Just answer a few short questions to find the study pathway that will help you to become a teacher in no extra time.

Early Childhood Education

UNE offers a range of qualifications in Early Childhood - whether you want to build on your prior study and work experience to become qualified as a four-year trained Early Childhood Teacher, or want a dual qualification to enable you to work in both Early Childhood Centres and Primary Schools.

Primary Education

Our Primary Education programs will qualify you to work as a primary teacher across Australia, and also give you opportunities to study a range of discipline areas, along with professional placements. They can also be completed in tandem with either Early Childhood Education or Secondary Teaching, so you’ll graduate with double the career options.

Bachelor of Education (K-6 Teaching)

The Bachelor of Education (K-6 Teaching) is an initial-teacher education program to prepare Primary teachers who can teach from Kindergarten to Year 6. The degree structure also allows students to complete a primary teaching specialisation in Mathematics, Science and Technology, and Languages. This degree is structured to meet the NESA ‘3 Band 5s including one in English’ requirements within the first year of study. This means you can become a qualified primary in the same amount of time as before, even if you don’t meet the new entry standards.

Secondary Education

We offer Secondary Education degrees in the curriculum areas of Arts, Mathematics, Music and Science. These degrees have teaching areas available in the following disciplines:

Arts: Aboriginal Studies (HSIE), Ancient History (HSIE), Drama, Economics (HSIE), English, Geography (HSIE), Languages, Modern History (HSIE), Society and Culture (HSIE), Studies in Religion (HSIE), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Science: Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Computing Technology Software Design and Mathematics, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics

Our Bachelor of Education (Secondary Arts, Mathematics, Music or Science) are structured to meet the NESA ‘3 Band 5s including one in English’ requirements within the first year of study. This means you can become a qualified primary in the same amount of time as before, even if don’t meet the new entry standards.

Special and Inclusive Education

Our Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education (Primary) is one of the few offered in Australia and can be studied either online or on-campus. This degree prepares teachers to work in an inclusive setting (local primary school) or a special class (within a local primary school or within a special school).

In-Service Conversion

The Bachelor of Education (In-Service Conversion) is designed for currently accredited teachers to upskill to a new sector of teaching (i.e. secondary to primary or primary to secondary), or for accredited secondary teachers to upskill to another teaching subject.

Postgraduate Degrees

UNE provides a range of postgraduate degrees for teachers that are tailored to their demanding lifestyles and varying career aspirations, including teachers working toward an advanced level of accreditation with the NSW Institute of Teachers.

Within the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies specialisations in Gifted and Talented: Teaching for High Potential; Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (also known as Teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)); or Careers and Transition Education are available.

In the Master of Education, specialisations in Comparative Education, eLearning, Gifted and Talented Education, Indigenous Australian Education, Special Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (also known as Teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)) and Literature and New Literacies are available.

Studying Online

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.
