Archaeology

Archaeology is concerned with the origin and development of societies around the world through the recovery and analysis of artefactual and environmental traces. Drawing on both the humanities and the sciences this discipline aims to extract the maximum amount of information from the incomplete remains of the human past. Areas of study include our earliest ancestors, to the settlement of the Pacific region and the origin and development of complex societies. We offer specialist training in forensic methods, ancient DNA and the study of indigenous rock art. The method of archaeology is science-based and technical and students will learn practical as well as theoretical skills.

Archaeology can be studied as a major within the Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, Graduate Certificate and Master of Arts, and the Bachelor of Science. Archaeology can also be taken as elective units in a wide range of UNE degrees.

Indigenous Studies

Indigenous Studies offers an array of stimulating units which examine the issues and factors that have shaped and influenced change within indigenous communities in Australia and beyond. Units available cover a broad range of areas including Indigenous Peoples and Colonisation, Aboriginal Archaeology, Analysing Change in Indigenous Societies, Indigenous Health, Aboriginal Resilience and the Arts, and Australia's Indigenous Languages.

Indigenous Studies is a listed major within the Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, Graduate Certificate and Master of Arts. The Bachelor of Social Science also offers a major in Aboriginal Perspectives.

Master of Arts

The Master of Arts offers majors in Archaeology and Indigenous Studies, and allows you to refine your professional skills, in a relatively unrestricted program of study. Examples of careers that can be assisted through an MA include management, public relations, foreign affairs, education, business, human resources, and research.

Studying Online

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.

How Does
Online Study Work?

To make sure your learning can take place when it suits you, UNE provides online facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, engage with other students, order library books, check your results and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
