Geography

Geography is the study of interactions between human society and the natural and built environments, and the places that are produced from these interrelationships. Geography brings a unique perspective to current environmental, social, economic, population and cultural issues through its appreciation of the role of all scales - global, national, regional and local - in influencing change.

Geographers address the big issues facing society: from understanding migration patterns and investigating social and economic inequality, to exploring the condition of our inland rivers and forecasting the likely impact of climate change and sea level rise on coastal towns and cities.

Human Geography and Physical Geography are available as a major within the Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Diploma in Arts, and Geography is available as a major within the Bachelor of Science, Graduate Certificate in Arts and Master of Arts.

Planning and Management of Natural Hazards

The Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Planning and Management of Natural Hazards take a multidisciplinary approach to looking at natural hazards and how society can build resilience in the face of natural hazards. You will build from a broad knowledge of natural hazard situations towards questions of policy development in the field of hazard mitigation. The courses cover the following topic areas:

  • Climate change and future planning
  • Environmental factors that combine to produce natural hazards
  • The ecological, social and economic consequences of natural hazards and disasters
  • Methods relevant to studying aspects of natural hazards and disasters
  • Mitigation strategies and associated opportunities for policy development

Within the Grad Dip and Masters, you can also expand your expertise via a choice of elective units in population, physical and/or economic geography, land use planning, risk management, and Graphical Information System applications.

Planning

Urban and regional planning is about shaping the places in which we live, work and play. Planners help design the future of our cities, towns and regions and create places that are attractive, environmentally sustainable and economically efficient. Because these places are made up of many different elements, planning draws upon diverse fields of knowledge. It is multi-disciplinary, both a science and an art.

Planning students learn about development, the environment, transport, urban design, architecture, the economy, law, heritage, climate change, housing, society and culture, tourism and shopping - at the same time.

Diploma in Town Planning

The Diploma of Town Planning seeks to provide a formal qualification at tertiary level in the area of urban and regional planning and is designed to broaden knowledge and provides a pathway for further university study.

The Diploma is an introductory course suited to:
  • people who are looking at widening their employment prospects or who are interested in entering a career in planning;
  • local government employees or people working in the planning system in an a who wish to develop their skills and career prospects;
  • TAFE students who have completed a CERT IV (in any area);
  • and unqualified planning assistants.

Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning

The Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning leads to a professional career in planning, with employment opportunities in both city and country. Planning is about designing places that will stand the test of time - not cost the earth. Planning is about working towards a more liveable, more sustainable world.

Planners need to be familiar with a wide range of issues and the degree provides a broad general education in all major areas of planning and urban design, including land use planning, social planning, economic planning, transport planning, environmental planning, professionalism and ethics, and environmental and planning law.

Work experience is an important part of the program and means that you'll receive a hands-on education, opportunities to put your learning into practice and a head-start in terms of gaining on-the-job experience.

Master of Urban and Regional Planning

The Master of Urban and Regional Planning offers a thorough grounding in urban and regional planning, both to graduates wishing to enter the profession, and to practising professionals wishing to upgrade their knowledge.

The course is fully accredited with the Planning Institute of Australia, and graduates are eligible for membership of the Institute's Urban and Regional Planning chapter. Graduates who have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma at an appropriate standard are eligible for advanced standing entry to the Master of Urban and Regional Planning.

Studying Online

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.
