UNE School of Law

Since its establishment in 1993, the School of Law has developed an important position in Australia's legal and scholarly community. As the country's largest and most experienced online provider of legal education with world standard research, the School of Law provides opportunities to undertake Australian legal studies for people living anywhere on the continent and beyond, who might otherwise lack these opportunities.

Lecture podcasts are made available for online students, along with online readings, discussion boards, videos and quizzes, meaning you can study where and when it suits you. On campus students will experience small class sizes and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the college experience.

Our Bachelor of Laws degrees are accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner, and mutual recognition legislation extends admission to other Australian jurisdictions.

Core units in our Bachelor of Laws degrees include Criminal Law, Law of Contract, Constitutional Law, Corporate Law, Criminal and Civil Procedure, Property Law, Evidence and Proof, Equity and Trusts and Jurisprudence.

Elective unit options include Dispute Resolution, Succession, Conveyancing, Indigenous Australians and Law, Intellectual Property Law, Human Rights, Industrial Law, Local Government Law, Environmental Law, Taxation Law, Public International Law, Family Law, Information Technology Law, Commercial Law, Medico-Legal Issues and Animal Law.

Bachelor of Laws (3 Year)

The Bachelor of Laws (3 Year) is available to Year 12 applicants with an ATAR or equivalent of at least 90.00, or anyone who has completed a Diploma or above qualification with sufficient grades.

This degree encourages both a critical and progressive approach to the existing law and legal system, ensuring you understand both the law and the context.

Bachelor of Laws (4 Year)

Bachelor of Laws (4 Year) is designed for people who are new to university study or to the study of law, including people who want to change careers or get a qualification. For the first year of this degree you will undertake elective units from any other areas within the university, such as languages, physics, business, communications, statistics, history, biomedical science, media studies, psychology, accounting to name just a few. This first year will prepare you for the study of law, as well as give you the opportunity to expand your academic horizons.

Master of Laws

Through our Master of Laws (Coursework), you will develop independent critical thinking and legal analysis skills. You will gain specialised knowledge and skills for professional practice, scholarship, research and/or further learning. The focus of this Masters is the Australian legal system. However, you will be encouraged to take a global and international perspective in evaluating the law and examine academic literature and scholastic articles dealing with other jurisdictions and be challenged to make comparative analyses. You will be encouraged to develop a high standard of professional writing and research relevant to current issues in law and practice.

Students will have the opportunity to choose units of interest or specialise by undertaking units that form a major:

  • Commercial Law
  • Crime and Criminal Justice
  • Health and Science
  • International Law
  • Natural Resource Governance

Criminology

Criminology is the study of crime, violence, crime control, crime policy and prevention. A criminologist looks at the reasons for crime and why it is committed, and what effect crime has, both on individuals and society as a whole.

In the Bachelor of Criminology you will study criminal law, criminology, forensic science, forensic psychology, policing, penology and the sociology of deviance and victimology.

A double degree in Criminology and Law provides you with the flexibility to either pursue a purely legal career as a practitioner or to build a successful career in criminology, drawing on legal skills and knowledge.

Studying Online

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.
