English
English has a long tradition of excellence at UNE, having been taught since the University was founded in 1938. As an English student you will immerse yourself in novels, plays, poetry, fiction and non-fiction with a wide range of origins, including from American, Australian, British and Indigenous cultures. You can also study texts from key historical periods, such as the Renaissance and the Victorian era, plus Contemporary Literature, as well as gaining an understanding of important cultural, theoretical, and social concerns, in Critical Theory, Australian Literature, and Children’s Literature.
You will learn the secrets of great literature, how it shapes society and how society affects it. You will also learn skills in practical writing, research and how to write to persuade, inform and delight, with an eye to your future career.
English can be studied as a minor in the Advanced Diploma in Arts, or as a major in the Bachelor of Arts, Graduate Certificate in Arts and Master of Arts. English units can also be taken as electives across many undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Media and Communications
The Bachelor of Media and Communications, and the related majors within the Bachelor of Arts, offer a balance of academic and vocationally relevant education. They provide a flexible approach to media and communications, covering digital media and internet studies; the changing role of film, television and print media; and studies in writing, editing and publishing.
You can explore units on new media and Australian and international film/television including features and documentary, news media and advertising. Other units include rhetoric and persuasion, popular culture, children’s media and writing in different genres, including non-fiction, and media-based and professional writing.
Writing
Our writing programs explore varied forms and practices of writing. Building on the foundations of academic writing, they will help you develop knowledge of media-based, creative and professional genres, and give you the ability to apply that knowledge in your own writing.
Areas of study include an introduction to writing in academic and popular genres, and more advanced work in creative and critical writing, professional communication, writing short fiction and non-fiction, digital, social media, media-based writing (e.g. writing for the web) and publishing and editing. By examining the fundamental principles and techniques of good writing, our programs foster the ability to write successfully in different styles relating to different contexts and changing communications technology.

Online study can also be referred to as 'distance education' (also off-campus, or external study) and provides an opportunity for you to study without having to physically attend a campus.
To make sure your learning can take place when it suits you, UNE provides online facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, engage with other students, order library books, check your results and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
