UNE offers an exciting, challenging and thought-provoking suite of units in Archaeology and Indigenous Studies which can be undertaken as a part of a degree, or as majors within the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.

Archaeology is concerned with the origin and development of societies around the world. Areas of study include our earliest ancestors, to the settlement of the Pacific region and the origin and development of complex societies. We offer specialist training in forensic methods, ancient DNA and the study of indigenous rock art. The method of archaeology is science-based and technical and students will learn practical as well as theoretical skills.

Indigenous Studies offers an array of stimulating units which examine the issues and factors that have shaped and influenced change within indigenous communities in Australia and beyond. The Master of Arts offers majors in Archaeology and Indigenous Studies, and allows you to refine your professional skills, in a relatively unrestricted program of study. Examples of careers that can be assisted through an MA include management, public relations, foreign affairs, education, business, human resources, and research.

The Graduate Certificate in Arts, Advanced Diploma in Arts and Diploma in Arts also give you the opportunity to study a range of archaeology units.

UNE offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in archaeology and indigenous studies. Most are available to be studied online and can be started in one of our three entry periods: February, June, and October.

How does online study work?

Instead of turning up to a lecture on campus at a designated time, the course content is provided online for you to access when it suits you each week. It might be a podcast (recorded lecture), a set of readings, questions posed in a discussion board, an online quiz or a video. Your lecturer will guide you through the unit with a weekly plan of study.

Intensive Schools

Some online units have intensive schools, which are usually held in the term breaks at our Armidale campus. Intensive schools are a valuable and enjoyable experience that enrich the learning process and help build your networks. Check the Course and Unit Catalogue to see if any units in your degree have intensive schools.
Please note: International students who wish to study wholly online are only permitted to do so if they are studying online from overseas or are studying in Australia on a visa other than a student visa.
The Pathways Enabling Course prepares you for admission to an undergraduate course at UNE. It is free from course fees and available online. The course awards you with the minimum entry requirements and can provide credit towards your UNE degree.
