The Graduate Certificate in Planning and Management of Natural Hazards takes a multidisciplinary approach to looking at natural hazards and how society can build resilience in the face of natural hazards. The course will build from a broad knowledge of natural hazard situations towards questions of policy development in the field of hazard mitigation. The course will cover the following topic areas:
· Environmental factors that combine to produce natural hazards
· The ecological, social and economic consequences of natural hazards and disasters
· Methods relevant to studying aspects of natural hazards and disasters
· Mitigation strategies and associated opportunities for policy development
· Future trends in planning for and managing natural hazards.
The course can be taken on-campus or by distance on a part-time basis.

Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree from a recognised university in a related field of study, for example, Urban and Regional Planning, Geography or Environmental Science.
Students must meet the University's English Language Requirements for Admission Rule.
Advanced Standing
Advanced standing is not granted for units taken to meet course admission requirements. The maximum advanced standing shall be for units counting 12 credit points which are deemed to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the course.
Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be up to two years as a part-time candidate.
Course Requirements
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 24 credit points at 400-level.

Communication SkillsGraduates will be able to communicate effectively in the areas of natural hazard planning and management. In particular they will hone their online communication skills (off-campus students), their oral skills through discussion and presentations (on-campus students) and their written skills through assessment tasks such as essays (all students). Global PerspectivesA wide range of natural hazards and planning techniques will be covered in the course, providing graduates with knowledge about natural hazards and their mitigation that will be relevant across a range of geographic contexts. Information LiteracyAll units are delivered online, and students are encouraged to access online resources and discussions. Life-Long LearningThe course will provide advanced knowledge and skills capable of being utilised and built upon in a range of forums. These skills will be flexible and diverse, and will have multiple applications in a range of professional contexts and situations. Problem SolvingGraduates will develop high-level capabilities in solving problems relating to the management and planning for natural hazards, and in applying logical, critical and creative thinking to a range of hazard and disaster scenarios. Social ResponsibilityThe development of systems for appropriate planning, preparation, response and recovery from natural hazards and disasters is a whole of community issue. The course will prepare students to act in an ethical and socially responsible manner in this regard. Team WorkGraduates will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to collectively solve problems in some units. Students in all units will be engaged in collective discussions geared towards group learning. |
