Social Work

Social Work at UNE is uniquely designed to prepare you for work in diverse settings, particularly within rural and remote areas and communities. You will be exposed to a variety of situations throughout the course, to enable a better understand of how individuals, groups and communities experience issues such as social marginalisation, isolation and disempowerment.

Social Work is taught using a "Case Based Learning Model", as this assists you to develop the skills and capacity to understand multiple, and potentially competing, interests, psycho and social dimensions, and systemic issues. You will be taught using the latest online technologies, which will prepare you for contemporary social work practice within multiple service provision contexts.

UNE offers two Social Work degrees:

  • Bachelor of Social Work - a four-year Bachelor of Social Work degree for school leavers and for those without a university degree.
  • Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) - for those who have previously completed a three year university degree and wish to change their career direction, or for those already working in the community services who wish to boost their career trajectory.

Our social work degrees are internationally recognised and accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers; and you are eligible for membership of this professional body.

Nursing

UNE is at the forefront of nurse education and we have a reputation for producing excellent nurses who are in-demand because of their practical experience, and knowledge of Australian health care systems.

Bachelor of Nursing

Nursing plays a key role in health services across the world, and registered nurses work in a wide variety of settings. The Bachelor of Nursing equips graduates with the key knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of nursing. Students who successfully complete 6 trimesters of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) graduate with a Bachelor of Nursing and are eligible to apply to become a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA). The Bachelor of Nursing is available to commence in Trimester 1 (March) either online or on-campus.

Master of Nursing Practice

The Master of Nursing Practice is an entry-to-practice degree for individuals who have gained a non-nursing undergraduate degree in a health related area of study. It is not a postgraduate degree for individuals who are already nurses and who wish to undertake study to advance their practice or who wish to pursue a research pathway.

The Master of Nursing Practice is offered On Campus in full-time mode. Students participate in structured and timetabled learning activities along with the required clinical placements (800 hours across the degree).

Counselling and Mental Health

Our postgraduate counselling and mental health courses provide professional training in counselling specialisations to enable you to work in a range of counselling contexts. Emphasis is given to producing counsellors who are self-reflective and committed to lifelong learning in the areas of human development and counselling processes.

You will be introduced to the mental health care system in Australia, and will learn practical counselling skills to enable you to work effectively in the mental health field.

Disability

The implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has created a demand for employees with specialist education and training in the disability and human services sector. UNE has developed a suite of postgraduate degrees designed to equip you with the key knowledge and skills to help you adopt a more person-centered approach to people with a disability and their families. You will study clinical and neurobiological issues in disability management and NDIS business management.

Our Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Disability will develop your understanding of the scientific basis of disabilities, and how to apply evidence-based interventions to assist and manage clients’ lives most effectively. These degrees will help you and your organisation transition into the new era of disability service delivery, whether that be in the government, private or community sector.

Studying Online

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.
