Peace Studies

Peace Studies offers you the opportunity to examine alternative ways of addressing violence, resolving or transforming conflict, and assisting communities affected by violent conflict. By learning about these alternative approaches, you will be able to equip yourself with the skills, tactics and strategies to enable you to assist in the prevention of these conflicts, and the rebuilding of societies where they have taken place. You will be taught by staff with comprehensive experience in teaching and research in the areas of peacemaking, peacekeeping and peace-building, as well as environmental security and contemporary nonviolence - in both national and international contexts.

Peace Studies can be studied as a major in the Advanced Diploma, Bachelor, Graduate Certificate and Master of Arts degrees. Global Politics and Peace is available as a major in the Bachelor of International Studies and Bachelor of International and Language Studies, and Peace and Development Studies is also available as a major in the Bachelor of Social Science.

Political and International Studies

Political and International Studies (PAIS) is a vibrant area of teaching and research at UNE, with the major focus on power and people. It doesn't matter whether it be debates of international significance (climate change, or terrorism), or matters of local interest (such as pulp mills, or responding to neighbourhood crime), studying PAIS can help you explore all these issues. We are interested in finding out how things work, why things operate the way they do, and who wins and loses as a result. Our courses are always interesting, sometimes controversial, often dramatic, and inevitably have significant consequences; directly or indirectly, for each and every one of us.

Studying Online

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.

How Does
Online Study Work?

To make sure your learning can take place when it suits you, UNE provides online facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, engage with other students, order library books, check your results and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
