As the longest continuous provider of tertiary distance education in Australia, UNE has long understood the challenges faced by busy adults studying from home. It is one of the reasons why our students consistently rate us so highly for student satisfaction and teaching quality.
There are now many ‘johnny-come-lately’ universities in online education. UNE has been delivering distance education since 1955 – that’s longer than any other Australian university. Perhaps that’s why our students continue to rate us so highly for student satisfaction and teaching quality.
Our pathways courses prepare you for university study where you may not already meet the entry requirements. They have been specially designed to help you build the skills and confidence to succeed at university, no matter what your background.
You have the flexibility to study online with part-time study options so you can balance your commitments with study. Once you've completed your pathways course you may be eligible for credit for your first degree, helping you to fast track your studies.
The Pathways Enabling Course prepares you for admission to an undergraduate course at UNE. It is free from course fees and available online. The course awards you with the minimum entry requirements and can provide credit towards your UNE degree.
The Science Pathways program in the Bachelor of Scientific Studies is designed for students who may have little or no scientific background. It aims to build the skills and knowledge required to help prepare students for more specialised science-based degrees. It includes foundation units in basic sciences and allows you to choose units from a range of specific study pathways.
On completion of the program you can transfer into the science degree of your choice and receive credit for units already completed.
TRACKS Tertiary Preparation Program is an alternative entry program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who wish to apply for admission to UNE undergraduate courses. This 12-month program will prepare you for university study, and supports you to make informed choices about applying.
Please see course details for individual course rules and admissions criteria. Note some degrees have mandatory intensive schools which require attendance on campus.
We have three teaching periods (trimesters), commencing in February/March, July and November, giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.
At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.
Online study can also be referred to as 'distance education' (sometimes also off-campus education, or external study) and provides an opportunity for you to study without having to physically attend a campus.
To make sure your learning can take place when it suits you, UNE provides online facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, order library books, check your results and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
As a UNE student, you will have access to our professional support services including:
We believe that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community.
Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter.
UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.
Connect to online support at any time. If you are working on an assignment, you can upload a draft 24/7 and get detailed feedback in less than 24 hours.
Online after hours support (3pm – midnight) is available for foundation skills in maths, science, business studies, accounting, economics and statistics.
Academic literacy and assignment support is available for writing, assignments, research, referencing, and study skills.
Some online units have intensive schools (sometimes known as residential schools). They enable you to engage in practical exercises and classes that are designed to achieve specific learning outcomes. Intensive schools are a valuable and enjoyable experience that enrich the learning process and help build your networks.
To see if any units in your degree have on-campus intensive schools check the
