5 stars overall experience good universities guide seal

UNE has been helping busy adults study from home longer than any other Australian university. With more than 60 years of experience it’s no wonder UNE has an unbroken record of maximum 5 star ratings, awarded by our students, for teaching quality, student support and overall experience in the Good Universities Guide 2007-2019.

Languages

UNE's language courses offer you a gateway to the diverse languages of Europe, Asia and Latin America, including Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Languages are taught by experienced staff with national and international reputations in their fields of expertise and research. You also have the opportunity to study overseas for periods of 3-6 weeks, one trimester, or one year, as part of your degree. If you decide to study overseas, you will experience another country in a way that a tourist never could, while making friends, learning about other cultures, and expanding your general knowledge and language skills.

Diploma in Modern Languages

This course will enable you to communicate and become proficient in one language and culture - you can choose from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese or Spanish. This 8 unit Diploma can be studied over up to 4 years part-time, either as a stand-alone award, or as a concurrent enrolment with another UNE Bachelor degree.

Bachelor of Languages

This degree will help you acquire a thorough knowledge of one or more languages, and a deep understanding of its linguistics and culture. Majors are available in Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. You will also have the opportunity to study for a year in the country of your chosen language(s) as part of your degree.

Currently, agreements or bilateral exchange agreements exist with universities in China (Xi'an), France (Angers, Saint-Etienne) and French-speaking Canada (Quebec City), Germany (Oldenburg, Trier) and Austria (Graz, Klagenfurt), Indonesia (Gajah Mada, Muhammadiyah), Italy (Macerata), Spain (Jaén, Alicante) and Japan (Kagoshima, Aichi-ken, Tokyo, Kanazawa). Such agreements mean that tuition fees are waived, that help is given with finding accommodation and that an element of pastoral care is provided. Some financial assistance is available in connection with study at certain of these universities.

Bachelor of International Studies

The Bachelor of International Studies comprises units with a global perspective from several disciplines. Topical issues include global security, earth in crisis, Islamic studies, cross-cultural communication, trade, the European Union, and Australia's relations with the US, Asia and the Pacific Islands. You can choose from two of three majors to specialise in such as Global Politics and Peace; Societies (featuring sociology, development and religion); and Languages.

Bachelor of Arts

You can major in a language as part of a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. The BA gives you the flexibility to tailor a unique degree to suit your individual interests and strengths. It provides the skills of independent thinking and cultural awareness that underline the creation of an equitable, humane and innovative society.

Bachelor of Languages and International Studies

This degree aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge that will enable you to function effectively, both in Australia and overseas, in an international business/commerce context. You will spend a year in the country of your language major, with one semester of academic study at a partner university, followed by either one semester of work placement or an additional semester of academic study.

Master of Arts

You can choose from several majors in the Master of Arts which comprise Language, Linguistic and Cultural units. Available majors are: Asian Studies, Chinese Studies, Classical World, French Studies, German Studies, Indigenous Studies, Indonesian Studies, Italian Studies, Linguistics and Studies in Religion.

These units and most of the above majors are also available in the Graduate Certificate in Arts.

Linguistics

Linguistics can be studied as a major within the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Social Science, Master of Arts or the specialist degree Master of Applied Linguistics.

Master of Applied Linguistics

The Master of Applied Linguistics (MAAL) degree provides a professional qualification for those working in language teaching, language program management, TESOL, social services, health, education and the law, as well as those who work with linguistic and cultural minorities. No previous linguistics study is required, and the degree can be completed in as little as one year.

UNE's MAAL degree was Australia's first fully online Masters degree in Applied Linguistics, and our staff have over 15 years of experience in offering this high-quality interactive postgraduate course using the latest online technology. You will be part of a global classroom, interacting with your lecturers and with students from more than 30 countries via online discussion forums. You'll explore languages of the world, language acquisition, language in education, language in legal and other professional contexts, and intercultural communication - all at a time and place that suit your work or family commitments.

Choose from the General Program leading to the Master of Applied Linguistics, or the TESOL Major, leading to the Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL).

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies includes a range of units in literature and sociocultural areas of study, which can be taken as part of a language major or studied as electives. This is a fascinating and challenging area of study, where you will have the opportunity to explore major novels, plays and films from a range of cultures (some in translation), as well as gaining an in-depth knowledge of the societies in which the language is spoken.

You can study literature and sociocultural units in combination with a range of subjects, such as Media and Communications, English, History, Music, and Theatre and Performance.

A History of 5 Star Online study

At UNE, online study is about the kind of flexibility and support that can only come from a university that has long understood the challenges faced by adults studying from home.

We have three teaching periods (trimesters), commencing in February/March, July and November: giving you greater choice about when and how much they study each year.

How does online study work?

Online study can also be referred to as 'distance education' (sometimes also off-campus education, or external study) and provides an opportunity for you to study without having to physically attend a campus.

To make sure your learning can take place when it suits you, UNE provides online facilities which allow you to send questions, submit assignments, order library books, check your results and access other resources, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Student Support Team

As a UNE student, you will have access to our professional support services including:

  • Career development
  • Individual counselling — for personal and academic issues
  • Special needs — if you need adjustments to how you study because of temporary or permanent disability or you need diversity and equity advice.

Online Community

We believe that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community.

Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter.

UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality.
